Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Rio Magdalena, ca. 800 to 1500 CE. The finest urn from this region we have ever seen, let alone handled! Pottery lidded jar, used to store food and water, as well as interment of the dead. Bulbous base decorated with 4 applied frogs, eyes and top of head with added shell beads - some remaining, body decorated with cross-hatched designs in deep relief. The lid is adorned with a seated male figure, hands to his knees. He sits atop a 4-legged stool made from the underside of a large turtle, original copper ring still adorns his long thin nose. He wears a necklace and cross-hatched tunic and holds a cup in his right hand. Lid is further decorated in added net pattern with a possible mud fish shown captured on the reverse. An world class example worthy of the finest collection! Size: Vessel and lid measure an incredible 34"H (86.36 cm) x 19"W.
Provenance: Ex-private Laguna Niguel, CA collection acquired at Sotheby's New York, Lot 94, 11/16/2002. Previously owned by Stanley Marcus, founder of Neiman Marcus and an inveterate collector of Pre-Columbian art, shown photographed in Mr. Marcus's office.
