Description:

Richard Sloan (American, 1935-2007), "Eastern Bluebird", ca. 1968 CE. A colored lithograph of a sweet composition by the wildlife artist Richard Sloan, signed and dated in the plate, but also signed in pencil on the lower right. This piece is entitled "Eastern Bluebird (Sialia Sialis)" and depicts a male and female Eastern Bluebird protecting their nest of eggs that is sheltered within a hollow log. Interestingly, Sloan has captured the birds' courtship ritual; notice how the male flutters in front of the female with his wings and tail spread, probably singing as well. A superb example from this bird-loving artist who has been dubbed North America's "Dean of Rainforest Painters" and whose oeuvre respectfully follows in the tradition of John James Audubon (American, 1785-1851). Custom matted and framed under glass with an attractive green-toned wooden frame and mat that complement the piece beautifully. Size: 25.25" L x 20.75" W (64.1 cm x 52.7 cm); 37.75" L x 32" W (95.9 cm x 81.3 cm) including mat and frame

Sloan attended the America Academy of Art in his hometown of Chicago, Illinois and had quite an illustrious career. He was a staff artist at Chicago's Lincoln Park Zoo, had a sold out solo exhibition at the Abercrombie & Fitch Gallery in Chicago, and later sojourned extensively to paint the world's rainforests. Following his initial expedition to British Guiana in 1969, Sloan made seventeen trips to the Amazon Basin, the Andes in Peru, Guatemala, Trinidad and Tobago, Belize, the Yucatan Peninsula, and Thailand. Sloan's paintings have been exhibited in elite venues including the American Museum of Natural History, National Geographic Society's Explorers Hall, the Carnegie Museum of Art, the Royal Scottish Academy, the Gilcrease Museum, and more. Furthermore, his work has been included in twenty-five Leigh Yawkey Woodson Art Museum Birds In Art exhibitions. What's more, in 1994 this museum honored Sloan with the esteemed title of Master Wildlife Artist.
