Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mayan Territories, ca. 600 to 900 CE. A pale pink, cream, and grey chert eccentric flint, carved and knapped into a wonderful zoomorphic form - a scorpion! With an open mouth, twin antennae, small feet, and a long, upcurved tail, the figure can be posed as shown. Size: 4.25" L x 1.5" W (10.8 cm x 3.8 cm)

Chert flints are made using percussion, striking them with other stones; the process required to get a fine point requires training and skill. Flints carved not as weapons, but as interesting designs, had sacrificial and ceremonial use for the Maya, and are often found as offerings in caches inside of stone monuments and other architectural features.
