Pre-Columbian, Northern Highlands Peru, Ancash region, Recuay culture, ca. 200 BCE to 600 CE. A rare hand-built pottery figural vessel of a musician and his alpaca / llama. The man is playing a pan flute and the alpaca stands alert to his side, the vessel opening leading into the animal's hollow body. This is a beautiful painted example of kaolinite pottery, people of the highlands area of Ancash began to make fine pottery from kaolin-like clay / pastes which developed into what is now known as the Recuay culture. Size: 4.5" L x 3.75" W x 6.75" H (11.4 cm x 9.5 cm x 17.1 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, acquired from 2000 to 2010
