Description:

Pre-Columbian, Northern Peru, Recuay, ca. 100 to 300 CE. A well-built bichrome terracotta jug with globular body, dramatically flared rim, strap handle, and spout in the form of ruler's highly decorated head with large round ear ornaments and a headdress from which the spout emerges. Beneath the head, his elaborate regalia and beaded pectoral are delineated in negative-resist in black over tan. The walls of the vessel are also decorated via negative-resist with four abstract, animorphic forms with open toothy mouths, large round eyes, and perky triangular ears, all in red and black over pinkish terracotta. Beneath the striated strap handle is another abstract figure, this one perhaps both anthropomorphic and animorphic. A fabulous piece of visual culture from the Recuay peoples. Size: 6.75" at widest point x 6" H (17.1 cm x 15.2 cm)
