Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Northern Highlands, Recuay culture, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A hand-built and highly-burnished pottery jar with a hemispherical body, a planar shoulder, a stocky neck with a flared rim, and an arching strap handle, all atop a round but stable base. The orange-slipped vessel exhibits a stylized human head with elaborate earspools and a horizontally-crested headdress with a cylindrical 'horn' doubling as a pouring spout. A pair of abstract columnar jaguar heads decorated with red spots on black bodies flanks the central mouth. Elaborate red-and-black linear motifs adorn the neck and rim in triangular and circular registers, and six abstract saurian-form creatures march around the lower body beneath a strip of negative-resist diamonds. Size: 6.3" W x 6.125" H (16 cm x 15.6 cm).
