Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, northern highlands, Recuay culture, ca. 300 to 600 CE. A fabulous hand-built pottery figural vessel displaying a bulbous body, flat shoulder, conical neck, and wide, flared rim, all resting upon a round yet stable base. A lively visage presents on the vessel's neck, exhibiting target-motif eyes, an up-turned nose, and an open mouth with bared teeth, flanked by a pair of applied, annular ear spools. A short beard sits at his chin as striated locks of hair can be seen on the back of his head. Adorned in hues of black, cream, and russet on a light orange ground, the top of the vessel boasts an elaborate decorative program of geometric and zoomorphic motifs. Size: 9.75" in diameter x 12.875" H (24.8 cm x 32.7 cm)
