Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Recuay, Santa Valley, ca. 500 BCE. A kaolin stirrup vessel presenting a moving portrait created in an archaic style. The visage is comprised of ovoid eyes with running tears, a protruding triangular nose with delineated nostrils, an open mouth revealing upper and lower teeth, straight tendrils delineated in relief and painted with black striations to either side of the red face. The figure wears round earspools decorated with a white on black rosette motif and a red banded headdress over his coiffure of incised zigzagged locks. There is a separate side spout in addition to the large stirrup spout, and both are nicely decorated with striated motifs to accentuate their forms. A very special example with lots of personality! Size: 7.125" W x 8.2" H (18.1 cm x 20.8 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection; ex Roy Oswald collection, Arizona, USA before 2000
