Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, northern highlands, Callejon de Huaylas, Recuay culture, ca. 200 to 600 CE. A hand-carved stone warrior figure depicted seated upon a rounded base. The abstract figure leans slightly forward, holds stocky arms against the temples of a severed head of perhaps an enemy, and has sloping shoulders which taper to a thick neck. The expressive countenance is composed of bulging circular eyes, a broad nose above a miniscule mouth, a strong jaw line, and discoid ears, all beneath a rounded forehead. Faint traces of original red pigment are visible across the figure's face. Warrior figures with severed heads like this example are symbolic of strength, power, and victory. Size: 6.75" W x 7.75" H (17.1 cm x 19.7 cm).
