Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Northern Highlands, Recuay culture, ca. 400 to 600 CE. A hand-built and highly burnished vessel depicting a female figure seated with both legs bent up to her body. Presented in hues of dark red and brown, the nude woman sits with arms tucked beneath perky breasts, sloped shoulders, a forward-facing head, and a slightly hunched back, with a stirrup-shaped handle protruding from behind her head and terminating at the midsection of the curved spout. Her face exhibits incised eyes, a protruding nose above thin lips, and tab-shaped ears flanking a bald skullcap. Size: 4.5" W x 7.8" H (11.4 cm x 19.8 cm)

  • Condition: Spout and handle professionally repaired with some light restoration over break lines. Minor abrasions and nicks, with light fading to pigment, areas of resurfacing, small chip to rim, and encrustations within some recessed areas, otherwise very good. Nice remains of painted motifs throughout. Rounded base means vessel cannot sit upright unassisted.
