Northwestern Europe, United Kingdom, London, WWI era, ca. 1915 to 1917 CE. A fascinating World War I steel periscope made by W. Watson and Sons with the serial number "NO 17-0." The scope is a tubular construction with a viewing window and mirrors at both ends, and the end caps rotate to act as lens covers. The face of one cap is stamped with the mark: "W. WATSON & SONS LTD. TRENCH MORTAR PERISCOPE LONDON." These periscopes were used for sighting when firing a mortar bomb from the trench. The mortar barrel had periscope posts attached for mounting the scope so the soldiers could align with their target without exposing themselves to the enemy. This periscope still functions as intended. Size: 17.125" L x 1.25" W (43.5 cm x 3.2 cm)
