Description:

Northern Europe, Viking or Norse culture, ca. 9th to 11th century CE. A beautiful cast-bronze dagger pommel with a three-lobed body, a slender insertion cavity, and a small opening atop the central body. The exterior displays a wondrous scene of multiple birds attacking one another by biting their necks with lengthy, powerful beaks. Each avian figure has a sinuous neck which expands to a slender body detailed with either segmented or diamond-shaped motifs, and the relief details are set against a stippled ground. Fine layers of brown, green, and russet patina envelop the pommel. A stunning example of high-quality Viking weaponry! Size: 2.05" L x 0.625" W x 0.75" H (5.2 cm x 1.6 cm x 1.9 cm).

For a stylistically-similar pommel example, please see: Androshchuk, Fedir. Viking Swords: Swords and Social Aspects of Weaponry in Viking Age Societies. The Swedish History Museum, 2014, p. 612, plate 131.
