Description:

Northern Europe, Viking/Norse culture, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A charming cylindrical bead in the form of a bird whose stylized form has its roots in the post-Roman northern European world (see, for example, the birds depicted on the Sutton Hoo purse lid at the British Museum (1939,1010.2.a-l). The bird's body is depicted seated, with its wings laid back on its body and its long beak thrust forward; lightly cast lines form a line of feathers and some small details on the feet. Birds are some of the most common animal motifs from Viking art, which often depict somewhat abstract zoomorphs. Odin's ravens, Huginn and Muninn, whose role was to bring information to the god, may have been the inspiration for much of this artwork. Size: 1.95" W x 2" H (5 cm x 5.1 cm)
