Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Vicus, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. Rare and quite amusing pottery vessel in deep red/brown slip. The vessel is molded in the form of a llama with short tail, long nose and alert ears. Stradling his back is a rotund human with hands on his chest, facial features quite animated with deep scarification on his cheeks. Short conical spout connected via bridge to back of llama's head. This striding human motif is much better known in Moche ceramics and this is the first time I have seen it on Vicus pottery. Size: 6.5" W x 7" H (16.5 cm x 17.8 cm)

Provenance: ex-Ashland University Museum, Ashland, Ohio, USA before 2000
