Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz culture, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A fantastically creepy molded pottery skull, its ghastly hollow form delineated with its gaping nasal cavity, huge, staring eyes, and leering, toothy grin. It holds something between its front teeth that may be meant to represent drugs. Incised lines curve up from the eyes and the mouth to form high cheekbones. The skull is open at the back, with two holes drilled in the chin, presumably for attaching it to a larger piece or maybe for stringing it and hanging it from a belt. Comes with custom stand. Size: 3.45" W x 3.4" H (8.8 cm x 8.6 cm); height on stand: 5" (12.7 cm)

Provenance: Adeon Gallery, Chicago, Illinois, acquired prior to 1970
