Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Vera Cruz, ca. 600 to 800 CE. A beautiful hand-built, polychrome terracotta bowl of a deep rounded form, the exterior walls decorated with a pair of parrots delineated in white alternating with pairs of pink and white bean-like forms in the main register and a narrower upper register of repeated white triangular forms and dot motifs - perhaps representing hillsides or mountaintops beneath dotted skies. In the Pre-Columbian world, birds were regarded as metapors for the sun, models for hunters and warriors given their strong talons, acuity, and speed, and ideal communicators with the celestial gods. Parrots, in particular, were believed to be sacred incarnations of sky deities. Size: 7.875" W x 4.125" H (20 cm x 10.5 cm)

Provenance: ex-collection of the late Alfred E. Stendahl, Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA
