Description:

Pre-Columbian, Gulf Coast of Mexico, Veracruz culture, ca. 500 to 700 CE. A rare deep-walled bowl standing on three short, nubbin feet, its creamware surface decorated with sinuous, thick black lines forming decorative motifs of serpents on the interior and exterior. In tondo is the head of the creature, its forked tongue slithering out from its mouth, its large eye carefully drawn. The serpent was a supernatural symbol, associated with the gods and the creation of the earth. Size: 6.5" W x 4" H (16.5 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
