Description:

Pre-Columbian, Mexico, Veracruz culture, ca. 6th to 8th century CE. A rare, handsome carved pottery bowl, its exterior decorated with a dense relief scene of warriors, some with animal heads, including a jaguar and an avian figure, chasing each other around and around the steep-walled body. The interior of the vessel as well as a thin strip around the exterior rim is smooth and burnished. Carved pottery represents an innovation in Mesoamerican technology, and a small group of Veracruz artisans seem to have been quite skilled with the technique, as shown here. Originally the lower profile areas of the relief scene were filled in with a red hematite pigment which has been lost over the years. Size: 6.55" W x 4" H (16.6 cm x 10.2 cm)

Provenance: private southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
