Description:

**Originally Listed At $750**

Ancient Central Europe, Urnfield Culture, Late Bronze Age, ca. 11th to 10th century BCE. A gorgeous example of a large and fashionable bracelet formed from a single copper strip that spirals around itself 21.5 times. Each of the coils are still able to gently articulate away from their neighboring coils - impressive given its advanced age - and the exterior surfaces are incised with repeating linear and chevron motifs, perhaps as a means of personalizing the accessory. The tight spiral form was a markedly popular style of late Bronze Age and Iron Age Europe. Often buried with women or children of high social status, bracelets like these were symbolic of the status of the deceased and are common finds in dig sites across Central Europe. Beautiful layers of green, brown, and russet patina envelop the entire bracelet. Size: 3.3" W x 4.8" H (8.4 cm x 12.2 cm)

Provenance: ex-Royal Athena Galleries, New York, New York, USA; ex-private French collection, acquired in 2008

  • Condition: Slight bending to overall form of some coils, with softening to incised V motif, and encrustations mostly along interior surfaces, otherwise intact and excellent. Wonderful green, brown, and russet patina throughout. Coils are still flexible with each separating from one another, but we do not recommend wearing this bracelet due to fragility.
