Description:

Pre-Columbian, Central Mexico, Valley of Mexico, Tlatilco, ca. 800 to 500 BCE. A fascinating figure of a standing female, perhaps depicting a woman performing a dance or ritual. She stands with her sizeable head tilted upward, her face exaggeratedly large compared to her body, allowing us to see her eyes, nose, and mouth in great detail. She wears spool earrings and a draped headdress. Her arms are outstretched, her torso nude, but her legs are covered by wonderfully sculpted, shell-like decorations that seem to overlap. Just looking at them, one can hear the sounds of all those individual pieces clacking together on a real costume. Remains of blue pigment decorate the headdress and the legs. Size: 3.6" W x 6.3" H (9.1 cm x 16 cm)
