Description:

Pre-Columbian, Teotihuacan, ca. 100 to 900 CE. A charming bichrome bowl, with four stepped legs that look like pyramids in profile and two incised registers, each showing a human figure who is kneeling with one hand out in front of his or her face, the exterior body. Between the two registers are deeply indented, navel-like spots on the center of the body. The imagery was incised after the creamy slip paint was applied but before the vessel was fired. When originally made, cinnabar may have been spread over the incised lines to provide a reddish color. Incised vessels are a classic form from Teotihuacan, "The Place of the Gods" as the city was known by the Aztecs (its true name is lost to history). Artisans in Teotihuacan had enormous influence, both through widespread trade during their own time and the stylistic legacy they left to their descendant cultures. Size: 6.25" W x 6" H (15.9 cm x 15.2 cm)
