Lot 165B
Pre-Columbian, Caribbean/Florida, Taino people, ca. 15th century CE. A small petrified bone pendant (probably Hispaniolan Hutia - a type of native rodent)in the form of a skeletal human figure. This hand carved piece is in the round, and has many interesting details - the skull-like face, the drawn-up knees, the hands raised to cover the ears, and the ribs and spine showing on the back of the figure. Taino society, a loose collection of chiefdoms, was composed of commoners, who were responsible for gathering and hunting food, and members of the nobility, who were artisans creating items like this one.
