Description:

Ancient Near East, Sumer, ca. 3rd to 2nd millennium BCE. A lovely hand-carved rock crystal pendant depicting a minimalist duck figure. The recumbent figure has a flat base and rests its neck on its back with an ovoid head with a short, rectangular beak. A small suspension loop is drilled through an area between the neck and body. The ancient Sumerians would use weights of this form to weigh quantities of different materials. Typically weights like this example were carved from dark, heavy stone, making this lightweight rock crystal example one of exceeding rarity! Size: 2.4" L x 0.75" W x 1.4" H (6.1 cm x 1.9 cm x 3.6 cm).
