Description:

Pre-Columbian, northern Peru, Sican / Lambayeque Valley, ca. 800 to 1100 CE. A fine rendering of a male figure, skillfully carved from a very dark, lustrous greenstone. He stands at attention, facing forward with hands held to his sides and feet together. He is clearly an elite individual - perhaps a cazique, warrior, or shaman - given his elaborate headdress presenting an intricate decorative program of incised and partially drilled details likely representing jewels and precious metal elements, his fringed poncho, and matching loin cloth. In addition, his ears are perforated for the suspension of decorative ear ornaments. The Lambayeque were a wealthy society who reveled in creating ornate items that showcased their wealth, such as masks and vessels made of precious materials like silver, as well as elaborate clothing and ornaments depicted in this example. Size: 3.625" H (9.2 cm); 3.875" H (9.8 cm) on included custom stand.
