Description:

Ancient Greek world, possibly Thracian, ca. 330 BCE. These are seven really beautiful small artifacts, tiny gold buttons bearing a profile likeness of Alexander the Great. Although the image stamped into the gold very closely mirrors that of Alexander's bust on the silver tetradrachm produced during his lifetime, there items were certainly manufactured as buttons and were not coins -- they have no obverse image. They all have miniscule holes drilled into the sides to be sewn onto garments. The Thracians, brought into the Macedonian Empire by Alexander and his father Philip II, were renowned for their gold work and are known to have produced other artifacts related to these Macedonian kings. Size: 0.4" W (1 cm)
