Description:

Rome, ca. 1st century BCE to 3rd century CE. These are attachments that would have been part of a chariot -- studding the axles or decorating the body. They would not have been used on a racing chariot, as those were stripped down and built to be as light as possible; instead, they were probably part of a chariot used in processions, parades, and ceremonies. Each attachment consists of a bronze face over a utilitarian iron backing; the lion's faces are matched and each has its mouth open in a roar. There are four of these. The other two simple round objects divided into sixths. Amazing to have all six in a group! Comes with very nice custom stand! Size of each: 2.5" L x 1.5" W x 1.75" H (6.4 cm x 3.8 cm x 4.4 cm)
