Description:

Near East, Sassanian, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A solid cast bronze avian form cauldron foot, a perky bird form with outspread wings extensively incised with feathers and outstretched legs. Its lively visage in relatively high relief with pointy beak and spiraled eyes framed by an incised crest. The Sassanian culture created notable metalwork, oftentimes in the form of animorphic or anthropomorphic figurines. Although animal forms were also created in ceramic, the bronze founders achieved a most distinguished repertoire of forms. Beyond the enticing artistry and iconographic symbolism, bronze animal figurines created by the Sassanians also had a purpose. In this case, for example, the bird form was likely the foot of a cauldron. A superb work of ancient bronze with stunning green patina! Size: 3-1/2" x 2-1/2" x 2-1/4" (8.9 x 6.4 x 5.7 cm)
