Description:

Northern Europe / Central Asia, Finno-Ugric culture / Early Viking / Viking Rus, ca. 5th to 11th century CE. A gorgeously ornate cast bronze pendant of the dangling or ringing pendant style found in the territory of the Maris, along the Volga and Kama rivers in Russia. A long, flat piece of bronze, cast to look like rope, with ten loops along its bottom edge, holds ten dangling, multi-tiered chains (one is now lost), each terminating in a dangling hollow bell shaped piece of bronze. These dangling chains were a common style in this period across central Asia and into northern Europe, designed to make a jangling noise and catch the eye. Size: 3.25" L x 3" H (8.3 cm x 7.6 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.

  • Condition: One of the chains is now lost, but otherwise the piece is well-preserved, with a pretty, blue-green patina that is a rare color of patina for items from this region and indicates a high tin content in the alloy.
