Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 2nd century CE. A mold-made pottery toy figure of a horse draped with fine cloth and detailed harness. The legs are joined together so that the figure stands on sturdy pillars rather than lifelike legs. There are traces of red pigment on the body and black pigment on the mane. Size: 4.45" L x 1.4" W x 3.75" H (11.3 cm x 3.6 cm x 9.5 cm)

Roman children were well-loved and had a plethora of toys, made from a variety of materials, just like toys today. These toys were also designed according to a child's age; this one was probably for a child a bit older than a toddler. It is interesting to think about its iconography - Were the child's parents wealthy? Did they own their own horses? Or was this part of a game played about soldiers? What kind of imaginative games would a child have played with this toy?
