Description:

Rome, late 2nd century to 1st century BCE. A beautifully made redware dish, in the Arretine (Red Gloss) style, first produced in Arretium (Arezzo), Italy, although they were wildly popular in other areas of Roman control, particularly Gaul. The dish sits on a wide, round foot and has a flat interior with a pronounced rim decorated on its exterior by rosettes and Silenus heads. These objects were made to have a highly reflective surface, meant to recall glass or silver. The technique used to finish the slip on items like this one led to its name, terra sigilata, literally "sealed earth". Size: 6.2" W x 1.6" H (15.7 cm x 4.1 cm)

Provenance: Ex - Prominent LA County collector who acquired these prior to 2000
