Description:

Near East / Holy Land, Palmyra, Roman period, ca. 1st century CE. A mold-made terracotta figure of a standing youth who holds something - maybe a musical instrument? - in the crook of one arm. He has curled hair that peeks out from beneath his slightly pointed cap. His wide eyed face is a uniquely Palymyrene style. This figure may have been a cult image from the city, but its purpose is not entirely clear. The inspiration from Classical influence, where mold-made terracotta votive figures were common, is clear. Size: 3.45" W x 7.05" H (8.8 cm x 17.9 cm)

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection, acquired before 2000
