Description:

Rome, ca. 100-400 CE. Although this piece is just part of a small jar, it has value because of its deep blue color. The coloration comes from the inclusion of cobalt in the glass blowing process. A small jar like this probably would have been an unguentarium, used for keeping perfume. Perfume was worn by Romans of all genders and nearly all class levels, but as cobalt was rarer, this particular piece may have belonged to someone of higher status. Size: 2 1/4" tall, 1 3/4" wide at its widest point, and 1 1/4" deep. Provenance: Ex-Deneberg Fine Arts, Los Angeles, CA. All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back. A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids. #110103
