Description:

Ancient Art. Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A heavy cast bronze concave shield boss in the form of a snarling lion's head, with a thick iron hook in the back for attachment. The lion's face is angry and detailed, with bared teeth and a huge mane that projects behind him. His eyes stare straight ahead, narrowed and fierce. This item would have graced the front of a shield. The traditional Roman shield was square or rectangular, with edges that curled inward. Bosses were placed directly in the center, designed to intimidate as well as serve a practical purpose, knocking away blows that landed on the shield. Size: 3.3" W x 3.4" H (8.4 cm x 8.6 cm); 3.5" H (8.9 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Orange County, California, USA collection acquired before 2000
