Description:

Roman, Imperial Period, probably produced in North Africa, ca. 3rd to 4th century CE. A flanged or collared bowl made from African red slip ware (ARS). Around the wide, curved rim are repeated, whimsical stamped designs of feathers and chickens - maybe this dish was made for serving poultry! The bowl is inset into a wide, down-curving rim, and stands on a round disk foot. Size: 7.65" W x 1.9" H (19.4 cm x 4.8 cm)

This type of pottery is sometimes also known as African Terra Sigillata, referring to the method used to seal the red slip onto the pottery during the kilning process ("terra sigillata" meaning "sealed earth"). These objects were mold made and traded far and wide. For example, a bowl of very similar flanged style to this one was excavated from the Roman villa of Haselburg in Hesse, Germany.
