Pre-Columbian, Peru, northern coastal region, Recuay, ca. 100 BCE to 400 CE. A large, double-sided canteen vessel depicting a stylized human head presenting an expressive visage comprised of incised ovoid eyes with negative resist lower lashes, a protruding pointy nose, a low relief toothy grin, a red complexion, all flanked by a pair of straight black locks of hair. He wears a low relief helmet and decorative round ear ornaments, and his coiffure continues on the back in incised zigzag, wavy locks. The vessel presents a stirrup with a flared spout atop and a smaller cylindrical spout emerging from one side. A lovely and rare vessel! Size: 7.75" L x 7.5" W (19.7 cm x 19 cm)
