Description:

Pre-Columbian, Peru, Recuay, ca. 500 BCE. A very early and unusual kaolin canchero or water dipper (also called a corn popper) painted via the negative resist technique in red and white. The composition depicts a maze of four running jaguars divided by a cross, so that they are running in four directions with a scroll design in the field. On the upper section are four warriors in high relief, each one holding a club and a shield, guarding the amorous royal couple engaged in coitus beneath the handle. Size: 14" W x 5" H (35.6 cm x 12.7 cm)
