Description:

Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Quimbaya culture, ca. 13th to 15th century CE. A rare and interesting hand-modeled ceramic seated woman holding a breastfeeding child. She has the classic Quimbaya facial features, with long, narrow slits for eyes, and a large, pierced nose that may once have worn a gold ring or some other form of jewelry. The baby's face is similarly depicted, including a pierced nose. Aside from these abstract features, the sculpture conveys a sense of warmth and kindness in the way that the woman holds the baby, supporting its head with her arm. Pressed dots around her shoulders form a necklace. Both baby and woman have interestingly shaped heads, perhaps implying that this was a culture that practiced infant skull shaping. Size: 2" L x 1.8" W x 3.1" H (5.1 cm x 4.6 cm x 7.9 cm)
