Description:

Native American, Southwestern United States, Arizona, Hohokam culture, Red-on-Buff Phase, ca. 900 to 1100 CE. An endearing hand-built pottery jar featuring quails! Using a paddle-and-anvil method to create the smooth surface ideal for receiving the red on buff decorative program, the vessel rests on a flattened base, the sides swelling outward and up to an inwardly curved rim. The exterior decorative program consists of alternating registers of linear bands and birds, which are clearly a species of quail - identifiable by the distinctive top knot. Size: 5" Diameter x 4.5" H (12.7 cm x 11.4 cm)

Provenance: ex-John B. Kendrick II collection, Denver, Colorado, USA, acquired 1965 to 1990; John B. Kendrick II was that son of John B. Kendrick, Wyoming governor and US senator
