Description:

Oceania, Australia, Aboriginal people, Stone Age, ca. 3000 BCE or earlier. An extremely rare artifact from Australia known as a cylcon, a conical tapering stone with faint vertical dashes in a line. These may have been ritualistic idols that resembled pestles which would signify food and nourishment - or perhaps the markings were a way to communicate or record numbers or directions. The name, cylcon, is a combination of what these enigmatic stones look like: Cylindro-conical, and their true function or significance has yet to be fully understood; one has been dated to the Early Stone Age, 20,000 years ago, but most cylcons are nearly impossible to date with certainty and range anywhere from approximately 50,000 to 3000 years old! Size: 8.5" L x 2" Diameter (21.6 cm x 5.1 cm); 10" H (25.4 cm) on included custom stand.
