Pre-Columbian, Central Coast Peru, Paracas, ca. 500 BCE. A gorgeous and sizable gauze textile panel comprised of cotton threads in a uniform vermilion color with a fringe border in hues of teal, emerald-green, cobalt, sunflower, coffee, jet, and cream. The thin gauze textile is bordered by a series of multi-colored loops, possibly intended as highly stylized hummingbirds. Size (textile): 61.5" L x 22" W (156.2 cm x 55.9 cm); (backing): 77.8" L x 38" W (197.6 cm x 96.5 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii, USA collection, 1995 to 2010; ex-private Hans Juergen Westermann collection, Germany, acquired from the 1950s to 1960s

  • Condition: Losses to areas of periphery and interior of gauze textile, areas of hummingbird border, and many border tabs. Fraying and loosening to interior and peripheral threads, with fading and staining to some areas of original coloration, and minor creasing. Colors are still visible and vivid. Sewn against a modern textile panel on a fabric backing.
