Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Paracas, ca. 300 BCE to 200 CE. A stunning and rare gold plaque of the Paracas culture of the ancient Andes. Most likely worn as an attachment to clothing, the hammered gold plaque is adorned in repousse with an expressive visage showing two sinous lines streaming from the outer corners of the eyes, as if to represent tears, and a lunar shaped smiling mouth beneath which are repeated vertical lines perhaps indicating facial hair, face paint, or tattoos. Residing in a large ceremonial area and a major Early Horizon culture on the south coast of Peru, the Paracas were highly skilled artisans showing direct influence from Chavín. Custom stand. Size: 4" x 4" Provenance: Ex-Splendors of the World Gallery All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
