Description:

South America, Upper/Western Amazon Basin, Ucayali River, Peru, Shipibo peoples, ca. late 19th to early 20th century CE. Two fine hand-built ceramic bowls on flat bases with a striking decorative program. The highly-burnished exterior is adorned with intricate curvilinear/geometric motifs in an unusual red and tan color scheme as well as a bas relief visage on either side of the vessel. An outstanding pair of Shipibo ceramic vessels that grew out of the ancient Marajoara tradition. Size of largest (they are close in size): 7.75" W x 3.5" H (19.7 cm x 8.9 cm)
