Description:

Pre-Columbian, Southern Mexico, Veracruz or Tabasco region, Olmec, ca. 900 to 400 BCE. An magnificent jaguar pendant, hand-carved from a mottled green stone with dark inclusions. Displayed in a recumbent posture, this feline rests with one arm stretched out, almost as if pointing to something, while the other is curled beneath its massive head. Diamond-shaped eyes glare behind, while its curled lips and open mouth convey a defensive countenance. The jawline, nose, brow, and one perky ear are all delineated via the string-cutting method as are recessed areas denoting the back legs, tail, and body curvature. Heavy red cinnabar embellishments are visible across both sides, the deepest hues accentuating the eyes and mouth, and both tail and curled arm display drilled perforations for suspension. This is an exceptionally-rare example based on the complete feline form, its striking visage, and ample cinnabar remains. Comes with museum-quality display stand. Size: 4.5" L x 2.5" H (11.4 cm x 6.4 cm); 3.75" H (9.5 cm) on included custom stand.

The iconography of this stone is layered with symbolism. The jaguar was a symbol of power and kingship throughout the pre-Columbian New World; for the Olmec and others, it symbolized a fierceness as well as an individuality that they identified with leaders in their society. Warriors, rulers, hunters, and shamans alike also associated themselves with this king of beasts, the largest and most powerful feline in the New World. A nocturnal animal, the jaguar sleeps in caves and dark places and creeps quietly in the forest, evoking great mystery. This item was likely made to be placed into a tomb.

This item is an exemplar of ancient Mesoamerican sculpture, impressive for its technique, iconography, and well as the inherent beauty of ancient stone-working. A superb sculptural work from the Olmec, indeed the first Mesoamerican civilization that most regard as the forerunner of subsequent ancient American cultures such as the Maya and Aztecs!
