Native American, North America, Alaska or Canada, Nuu-chah-nulth (Nootka) people, ca. early 20th century CE. A rare set of 5 hand-carved wooden drawing templates, each showing a different black-painted image of either an eye, an avian-type head with a beak, or a large anthropomorphic face. Drawing templates like these examples were used in indigenous schools to teach children the artistic style of their people and to keep the tradition alive for future generations. Size of largest (face): 5.125" W x 3.75" H (13 cm x 9.5 cm); (display case): 2.5" L x 12.875" W x 12.875" H (6.4 cm x 32.7 cm x 32.7 cm)

  • Condition: Minor abrasions and wear to pigment commensurate with age, with a couple of stable hairline fissures on some templates, otherwise intact and excellent. Great preservation to black pigment across each template.
