Japan, Kwanto, Neolithic, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A simple yet elegant ancient stone skinning knife from the Kwanto region of Japan. Knives of the neolithic phase from the Kwanto region of Japan are relatively rare; more common are examples from the north. Kwanto is the most extensive plain in Japan situated in central Honshu Island, traditionally an important agricultural region, with high tectonic activity and was the site of one of the deadliest earthquakes and tsunamis in 1923. Size: 4-3/4" (12.1 cm). Provenance: Ex-private Randolph, NJ collection; acquired in the early 1980's in Santa Barbara from a respected Japanese Art dealer who acquired it in Japan.
