Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, Nazca culture, ca. 100 to 400 CE. A charming, hand-built ceramic doll depicting a nude female who sits upon ample buttocks with straight legs and painted hands resting on her abdomen, perhaps intended to direct attention towards her womb. Note how her genitalia and navel are delineated with applied black pigment. The figure is finely decorated with vivid polychrome details in white, red, and black hues atop a creamy beige ground. Her expressive visage is composed of almond-shaped eyes, a prominent nose, and a smiling mouth beneath a tab-shaped coiffure. Female figures are relatively rare in Nazca pottery, making this piece particularly unique. Custom museum-quality display stand included. Size: 2.25" W x 4.625" H (5.7 cm x 11.7 cm); 5.3" H (13.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private Southern California, USA collection, acquired in the 1970s to mid-1980s
