Description:

Pre-Columbian, South Coast Peru, ca. 1 to 300 CE. A fascinating polychrome stirrup vessel depicting nearly identical, perhaps twin figures joined via a tubular connection at their lower bodies and a bridged double stirrup spout above their heads. The figures present ovoid bodies with painted zoomorphic clawed limbs and scarf-like garments or collars, topped by anthropomorphic heads with expressive visages comprised of painted wide-open, almond-shaped eyes, stylized mouths, crescent moon-shaped motifs adorning their cheeks, caplike coiffures, and protruding noses delineated in relief. All details are painted in an attractive palette of red, orange, black, grey, and white hues. A very rare vessel from the Nazca. Size: 7.625" W x 7.875" H (19.4 cm x 20 cm)

Provenance: ex-Marcel Ebnoether collection, Basel, Switzerland, collected 1950-1970
