Description:

Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Nayarit / Chinesco, ca. 200 BCE to 200 CE. A delightful pottery vessel in the form of a double-headed dog adorned in red and beige pigments. The symmetrical animal stands upon 4 thick legs with heads on opposite sides, each displaying a tapered snout, delineated nostrils, an incised mouth, and heavy-lidded eyes. Rounded ears flank the ovoid hole at the top of each head which serves as rims to the vessel. Size: 13.2" L x 5.8" W x 6.8" H (33.5 cm x 14.7 cm x 17.3 cm)

Provenance: ex-Sally Snell collection, bequeathed by her uncle Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010

  • Condition: Professionally repaired with restoration and repainting over break lines. Minor losses along break line on snout of 1 head. Light surface wear as shown with some areas of fire darkening. Otherwise, excellent with liberal remains of pigments and nice earthen deposits.
