Native American, Southern United States, Southeast Ceremonial Complex, Mississippian / Caddo culture, ca. 12th to 14th century CE. A large flaked stone mace head of ceremonial form, made of yellow chert / quartzite stone by a Caddo Mound Builder culture. This monolithic piece is impressive for its size and skillfully knapped material. Written on the surface and typed on a paper label, this tool was purportedly "Authenticated Noton Allen, La Mesa, Calif. By Dean Blanchard Santa Barbara Museum Dr. Lane Collection." Norton Allen (1909-1997) was an archaeologist who specialized in Native American artifacts. Similar ritualistic maces have been found at Spiro Mound and the Duck River Cache.
