Description:

Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, Moche, Phase I, ca. 100 BCE to 100 CE. An extremely rare stirrup vessel depicting a sizable fortress, perhaps depicting the Pyramid of the Sun, its leader sitting with hands placed atop knees within the uppermost balcony. Within his seating quarters is another seated figure, perhaps an advisor or an attendant, and a pair of guards sit watchfully beside a set of stairs. The walls next to the guards are painted with 2 rows of white fish or sharks, while behind is a large stirrup handle and spout. The bottom of the vessel presents intricate zoomorphic scenes including a pair of jaguars on the front, barracuda gods on the sides, and a massive sting ray on the verso. Size: 7" L x 4.6" W x 6.8" H (17.8 cm x 11.7 cm x 17.3 cm)

Provenance: private Hawaii collection, acquired 2000 to 2010
